FIN TIPS BAN02

Useful fin-plug tips

  • Please take care when tightening grub-screws after inserting fibre-glass fins. Over tightening may erode the tabs on the fins and cause them to chip. Over tightening may also cause the threads in the fin plugs to strip. The recommended method to tighten the grub-screws is to turn them in until you feel the resistance from the screw touching the fin, then tighten one half turn more. Any holes in your fin tabs can easily be repaired using solar resin.
  • Stripped keys can be easily fixed by just filing down the key until it reaches a hex shape again
  • For tight grub-screws, remove the grub-screw and clean the hole in the fin-plug with an earbud or water in a syringe. Add a lubricant to the threads of the grub-screw, preferable silicone spray or vaseline. Then screw the grub-screw in until it touches the base of the plug, then reverse the grub-screw until it clears the slot. Insert fins and tighten.
  • Loose plugs probably indicate that you may have a crack or hole located around the plug which may be allowing water to absorb into your blank. Repair immediately.
  • When replacing fins, remember to clean out the slots in the board first, before inserting your next set
  • For stripped grub-screws, try using a metric allen key slightly larger than your fin key. Alternatively, try a drop of super glue on the end of the fin key, care must be taken not to spill the super glue on the threads. Press down firmly and hold the key in place for a minute, then gently remove grub screw.

Useful fin tips

  • Interchanging centre fins with smaller or bigger centre fins may improve the feel of your board. We recommend trying various options shown under our performance glass range.
  • Take care when removing fins from your fin-plugs. Pull the fin vertically to avoid damaging your board.
  • Some fins vibrate or hum at speed. This may be caused by the trailing edge of your fin having an uneven surface. Try sanding the back edge of the fin with a high grade water-paper. This should solve the problem
  • When purchasing a new set of fins you may find they are extremely tight in your fin-plugs. This is easily solved by gently sanding down the fin tabs or lubricating the tabs with silicone spray or vaseline.
